Postcard: Regensburg, Germany

Our journey through Central Europe continued with a stop in the medieval town of Regensburg in Germany. The UNESCO World Heritage site boasts a 2,000-year-old history and is considered the best preserved medieval city in Germany.

After we hopped off the Trafalgar coach, our guide Arne led us across an impressive bridge over the raging Danube River and toward the colorful buildings of Regensburg. Arne pointed out that the river levels were higher than normal due to a recent flood event in the area.

As we got to the main town, Arne led us through narrow walkways and showed us the massive St. Peter Cathedral. This was where our tour group split up for some free time to shop, eat, or wander through this medieval gem. My husband, Davis, and I asked Arne if he had any recommendations to find sausages (since Germany is known for a good bratwurst, obviously). Arne took us to a cute public market and pointed out a few vendors and went off on his own.

Nothing really piqued our interest, so we decided to forgo lunch altogether and opt for some ice cream and shopping. Apparently, the ice cream here in Regensburg was a must, according to Arne. More specifically, spaghetti ice cream (which he said was a popular dessert idea on a date). You’re probably as confused as we were when he said SPAGHETTI ice cream. No, it’s not actually spaghetti, but rather ice cream that goes through a machine and comes out in thin, noodle-like strands to resemble spaghetti.

Davis decided to try the spaghetti ice cream, while I opted for plain gelato. We can confirm: The spaghetti ice cream did indeed taste like normal ice cream.

Clutching our frozen treats, we perused the town and took photos as we headed back over the bridge and back to our coach. Though our time in Regensburg was short, it was still such a magical experience to walk through a town with so much history and significance.
